Accelerate Fund IV invests in Northernmost to improve transplant outcomes

Posted by Accelerate Fund | April 4, 2025

Edmonton, AB, April 4, 2025 – Accelerate Fund IV today announced its investment in Northernmost, an Edmonton-based medical device company developing a machine to preserve and transport donor kidneys for transplant. Participants in the $2.7 million seed round include National Kidney Foundation (US), Leva Capital, Threshold Impact and Startup TNT.

Founded by Ron Mills and Daniel Salamon, Northernmost aims to revolutionize organ preservation with the NoMo™ Kidney Pump, a next-generation perfusion machine. Unlike conventional ice coolers, NoMo’s compact design continuously circulates preservation fluid through the kidney, reducing organ damage and enabling transport over greater distances.

“We’re thankful for this vital support,” said Ron Mills, CEO of Northernmost. “And we’re proud to have earned the very first investment from Accelerate Fund IV.”

With kidneys being the most commonly transplanted organ, NoMo will increase the number of viable donor kidneys, improve transplant success rates, and potentially save healthcare payers tens of billions of dollars over the next decade. While initially focused on kidneys, the machine is anticipated to be adaptable for other transplant organs in the future.

“Northernmost represents exactly the kind of health innovation we’re excited to support – combining strong commercial potential with meaningful societal impact,” said Arden Tse, Investment Manager, Accelerate Fund. “They have a strong team addressing a clear need in the market, with regulatory and economic pressures driving the need for their solution. We look forward to seeing them hit their milestones to trigger their next capital raise to further their growth and impact millions of lives.”

This investment will enable Northernmost to complete product development with Bennu Engineering and establish manufacturing operations with Mountain Integrated in Edmonton. The company will preview the NoMo Kidney Pump to potential customers and industry experts at the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) Annual Meeting in June and the World Transplant Congress in August.
